Money

After learning about the desert we focused on learning about money (coins to be exact).  We:
Isaiah sorting coins into a cash register.
  • Learned the names of the coins.
  • Learned how much each coin is worth.
  • Learned about the head and tail of a coin.
  • Learned what was on the head and tail of each coin.
  • Practiced trading smaller coins for larger ones (ex. 10 pennies make 1 dime).
  • We read a book called "Benny's Pennies" and then wrote our own version of the book.

Deserts

Sorry....I need to catch up.

While we were working on counting down to the 100th day of school we were also learning about deserts.  The kids really enjoyed learning about where they live and liked seeing things we talked about when driving around.  You would think they had never seen a cactus before. :)

During this unit we discovered two new "movies" at the library that we enjoy watching to find out information.  These movies were "The Magic School Bus" and "Reading Rainbow."  Each series had a great episode about the desert.

First we talked about cactus.

Then we started learning about animals that live in the desert.  We talked about:
Coyotes

Rattlesnakes

Desert Tortoise

We also talked about javalinas.  We finished our desert unit with a field trip to the Zoo's Desert Trail.  We were able to see the ribs of a dead cactus and the holes the animals had made to live in.  We saw all of the animals we talked about, except for the javalinas who were on a routine check up with the vet at the time.  The kids were really upset about this.
We also practiced are map reading skills this day.

100th Day of School

We have had a great time counting to the 100th day of school this year!  We have been learning to count to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.  We have also been learning about place value as we count how many days we have been in school.  Rachel can count to 100 all four of those ways.  Isaiah is still working on it and is getting better and better.  He can count to 100 by 10s and has the pattern down for 1s, he just misses a number here or there sometimes.

So today (February 21, 2013) was our BIG 100th Day of School Party!  Ok it wasn't huge and it was just us, but we had fun.  We read 3 more 100 books today.
  • Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of School.
  • One Hundred Angry Ants.
  • Centipede's 100 Shoes.
We had a special snack with things that looked like ones and zeros.  They practiced making 100s with the snack before they ate it.

Then we read "The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza" and made a pizza with 100 toppings on it.
Rachel counted 10 of 5 different toppings and then put them in a bowl

Isaiah counted 10 of 5 different toppings and then put them in a bowl

Then Rachel and Isaiah put their toppings on the pizza.
Finished Pizza with 100 toppings on it!  It was a Yummy end to our celebration!

Day 99

Only one more day until the 100th Day of School!  Today we made 100 day hats for our 100th day of school party.  They decorated their hats/crowns with 100 stickers.

They had a really good time doing this and took over an hour working on them.  Rachel put stickers in patterns and Isaiah sorted out his stickers and put all the like ones together.  All I asked them to do was put stickers on their hats.  They made me so proud!

Day 98

Day 98 landed on a very busy day for us.  We spent most of the day away from the house, so Principal Grubbs made something easy we could do at Grandma's house during nap time.

First we read the book "The Wolf's Chicken Stew."  Then they had to find and color different objects in a number 100.  After coloring the objects they had to count how many of that object they had and write the number on the paper.  All objects totaled to 100.
This is Rachel's paper

This is Isaiah's paper
If you are reading this blog really carefully you will realize they both counted wrong.  Isaiah only has 99 objects and Rachel has 98 objects.  I do know that both were wrong, but did not get a chance to help them correct it on this day.

Day 97

Day 97 was a very fun day, especially for Isaiah.  Rachel and Isaiah had to work together to build something from 100 legos.  Legos are Isaiah's favorite toys right now.

Now of course I made them draw and write what they made as well.  Here are their papers.

Day 96

Day 96 landed on Valentine's Day.  This day we had another estimation "job".  Principal Grubbs gave the kids three jars with different objects in the jars.  They had to guess and fill out the chart on which jar had 100 objects in it (there was only one jar with 100).
Jar A had pennies, Jar B had candy hearts and Jar C had brads (for school projects).  The guessing went like this:
Jar A- Daddy
Jar B- Rebekah and Mommy
Jar C- Isaiah and Rachel
Here is a better picture of the jars.  Do you have a guess of which one has 100?

Answer- Jar C...Rachel and Isaiah were right!  They were so excited.  Their reward was 2 candy hearts out of Jar B.
