100th Day of School

We have had a great time counting to the 100th day of school this year!  We have been learning to count to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.  We have also been learning about place value as we count how many days we have been in school.  Rachel can count to 100 all four of those ways.  Isaiah is still working on it and is getting better and better.  He can count to 100 by 10s and has the pattern down for 1s, he just misses a number here or there sometimes.

So today (February 21, 2013) was our BIG 100th Day of School Party!  Ok it wasn't huge and it was just us, but we had fun.  We read 3 more 100 books today.
  • Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of School.
  • One Hundred Angry Ants.
  • Centipede's 100 Shoes.
We had a special snack with things that looked like ones and zeros.  They practiced making 100s with the snack before they ate it.

Then we read "The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza" and made a pizza with 100 toppings on it.
Rachel counted 10 of 5 different toppings and then put them in a bowl

Isaiah counted 10 of 5 different toppings and then put them in a bowl

Then Rachel and Isaiah put their toppings on the pizza.
Finished Pizza with 100 toppings on it!  It was a Yummy end to our celebration!

Day 99

Only one more day until the 100th Day of School!  Today we made 100 day hats for our 100th day of school party.  They decorated their hats/crowns with 100 stickers.

They had a really good time doing this and took over an hour working on them.  Rachel put stickers in patterns and Isaiah sorted out his stickers and put all the like ones together.  All I asked them to do was put stickers on their hats.  They made me so proud!

Day 98

Day 98 landed on a very busy day for us.  We spent most of the day away from the house, so Principal Grubbs made something easy we could do at Grandma's house during nap time.

First we read the book "The Wolf's Chicken Stew."  Then they had to find and color different objects in a number 100.  After coloring the objects they had to count how many of that object they had and write the number on the paper.  All objects totaled to 100.
This is Rachel's paper

This is Isaiah's paper
If you are reading this blog really carefully you will realize they both counted wrong.  Isaiah only has 99 objects and Rachel has 98 objects.  I do know that both were wrong, but did not get a chance to help them correct it on this day.

Day 97

Day 97 was a very fun day, especially for Isaiah.  Rachel and Isaiah had to work together to build something from 100 legos.  Legos are Isaiah's favorite toys right now.

Now of course I made them draw and write what they made as well.  Here are their papers.

Day 96

Day 96 landed on Valentine's Day.  This day we had another estimation "job".  Principal Grubbs gave the kids three jars with different objects in the jars.  They had to guess and fill out the chart on which jar had 100 objects in it (there was only one jar with 100).
Jar A had pennies, Jar B had candy hearts and Jar C had brads (for school projects).  The guessing went like this:
Jar A- Daddy
Jar B- Rebekah and Mommy
Jar C- Isaiah and Rachel
Here is a better picture of the jars.  Do you have a guess of which one has 100?

Answer- Jar C...Rachel and Isaiah were right!  They were so excited.  Their reward was 2 candy hearts out of Jar B.

Day 95

On day 95 we talked about money.  We counted 100 one dollar bills (fake money).  Then I asked them what they would buy if someone gave them $100.  They had to draw a picture and write what they would buy.

It is hard to see, but Rachel wrote she would buy 100 barbies.  She is doing great with writing and loves to do it.  She sounds out her words, uses finger spaces and punctuation and rarely asks for help any more.
Isaiah wrote that he would buy a big "Cars" airplane.  He is doing well with writing too.  He needs more help but he can hear the beginning, middle and ending sounds as he writes. There is no complaining about writing from him as well.

I gave them each a fake $100 bill to go along with this "job".  I thought they would be excited and play with itThey were not excited about it at all!  I guess only real money is exciting around here. :)

Day 94

Day 94 we took a 100 step walk.  The kids had to count 100 steps and then look around.  When they were done they drew a picture and wrote where they ended up.  This did not work out very well because they just ended up in front of houses down the street.  Rachel did make it to a pathway that leads to a park.
Starting from the front door

Here they go!

Isaiah turned right

Rachel turned left.  She landed right here after 100 steps.

Day 93

On day 93, we had a special lunch...pancakes!  We made a graph that said, "Can you eat 100 pancakes?"  Rachel, Isaiah and Rebekah answered yes on the graph.

So the 4 of them tried to eat 100 pancakes for lunch.  Don't worry they were really small.
100 pancakes!  They were silver dollar size.

Malachi & Rebekah eating their pancakes
They did a great job!  When they were all full they only had 12 pancakes left.  We love pancakes!  They were upset that they didn't finish all of them, but I was impressed that they almost did it.  I forgot to take a picture of what was left.

Day 92

On day 92, we worked with popcorn!  The kids counted out 100 popcorn kernels and then put them into the popcorn popper.
100 popcorn kernels!  I was surprise how little it looks in the popper!
Then the kids had to estimate how many cups it would make when popped.  They estimated 10 cups.  Then we popped the popcorn and used our 5 senses as it popped.

Starting to pop!

This is all we got!
There was exactly 1 cup of popcorn for 100 kernels.
The kids then used the popcorn for a page of a book they were working on called "The Tricky Teen Book".  They had to count 14 popcorn pieces, draw them, write the correct tally marks for 14 and then write the number 14, four times.  Then they could eat their popcorn.

Day 91

On day 91, we wanted to see if we were 100 unifix cubes tall.  We counted out 100 unifix cubes and taped them to the wall.  Then everyone was measured.  None of our family was 100 unifix cubes tall or taller.  Here is what everyone measured:
Rachel-62 cubes
 Isaiah- 57 cubes
Rebekah-52 cubes
Mommy- 86 cubes
Daddy- 98 cubes
Malachi was kept away from this as he was pulling the cubes off the walls.
After we were measured the kids had to draw pictures of themselves and fill out a paper saying if they were or were not 100 unfix cubes tall and then write the number of how many cubes tall they were.
Rachel and her picture being measured again.

Isaiah and his picture being measured again.

Day 90

On day 90, Principal Grubbs hid 100 Hersey kisses around the main part of our house.  The kids went on a scavenger hunt to find all 100. (We only found 99 that night, we found the last one the next morning on the wheat bucket). Then we had to use the numbers on the bottom to put them in order from 1-100.  After all that hard work the kids got to eat some of the kisses for a special dessert.

Countdown to the 100 days of school!

The last three weeks we have counted down to the 100th day of school with special "jobs" or activities that have been left from our Principal Grubbs (a.k.a Daddy).  We have enjoyed doing different things with the number 100 as we got closer to the big party day of 100 days of school.  Look at the posts below to see what we have done.
