Apples

The last two weeks of September thru the first week of October (3 weeks total) we spent studying apples.  Some things we did were:

  • Studied the life cycle of an apple.
  • Studied what the apple tree looks like in the different seasons.
  • Studied what the different parts of the apple are called.
  • We did an apple investigation and made a book out of it.  In it we recorded what color our apple was, if our apple had a stem or not, we measured and recorded the circumference of the apple, weighed our apple and counted how many seeds our apple had.  Each child had there own apple for this investigation.
  • At the end of our investigation we took our apples and made applesauce.

We also read the book "10 Apples On Top".  We tried to balance as many apples as we could on top.
    Rachel could balance one.

    Rebekah can balance one also.

Isaiah figured out how to balance two.
We then put the numbers 1-10 in order by putting 10 apples on top of hats.  This project took a couple of days because it was a lot of cutting.
We also did several art projects as well including making an apple puppet (and then they put on a puppet show) and practicing weaving.

One of the last things we did was make an apple pie (our first ever).  Here are a few pictures of us making the pie.

So excited!
Ready to bake!

Done!
After a day a baking the apple pie we had an apple taste test after dinner.  We tasted an apple, a dried apple, apple juice, our homemade applesauce (there was a little left from when we ate it) and the apple pie.  We did a graph to see what we liked best.  The apple pie won!  In case you are wondering the only thing that did not get a lot of votes was the dried apple, which is surprising because the kids love banana chips and dried apricots.
